What
It Means
The
Ontario Association of Credit Counselling
Services provides an Accreditation
program that ensures strong and
consistant operating practices for
its not-for-profit member agencies.
Accreditation requirements are based
on professional service delivery
standards, legal criteria and Association
standards of excellence. Achieving
accredited status is a mandatory
requirement for OACCS membership.
History
of Accreditation
The OACCS developed its unique Accreditation
Program for member agencies during
the 1980's. In doing so, the OACCS
became the first non-profit credit
counselling association in North
America to accredit its members.
The OACCS initiative in self-regulation
through accreditation was a significant
step. In April 1988, the Ministry
of Community and Social Services
identified the importance of assuring
the public that those responsible
for programs and services could
accurately account for them.
Accountability
The OACCS is confident that its
Accreditation Program satisfies
the Ministry’s expectations
for accountability. The Accreditation
program reflects the OACCS’
standards and values while encompassing
mandatory legislation and criteria
that the Ministry feels is important.
Qualification
To qualify for Accreditation and
OACCS membership, agencies must:
- Prepare extensive documentation
demonstrating that its Board,
Staff and Program structures
meet the rigorous standards
set by the OACCS,
- Closely
consult with OACCS regarding
the operations of the Agency,
and,
- Undergo
scrutiny by OACCS Reviewers
who have visited the agency
and have examined financial,
management and program records
to ensure that standards have
been met
Also,
community members such as agencies,
clients and creditors provide critical
input regarding how the agency is
serving the community.
Compliance
The high standards required to achieve
OACCS Accreditation clearly indicates
that the member agency complies
with important and strict criteria
concerning operation and governance.
